Although the surnames on this family history are listed as Ross and O'Neil, the history encompasses many other surnames in the recent and more distant past. We also include the Beatons, MacDonalds, Griffiths and Mitchells in this search of our ancestors. The various families emigrated to Canada from Great Britain at different times, the Ross/Griffiths being the most recent.
Catherine Elizabeth Griffiths sailed from Bristol to meet her betrothed John Ross in 1912, having originally booked her passage on the Titanic! Fortunately for our family history, she changed her reservation to a ship that was leaving at a later time because of family illness. Her fiance, John Ross, had been in Saskatchewan for several years working on the railroad and eventually homesteading at Waldeck, Saskatchewan.
The O'Neils have a much longer history in Canada having come here from Ireland in the 1700s.
The Beatons emigrated to Canada From the Island of Mull, Scotland, in the early 1800s most likely as a result of the Highland Clearnaces.
