About three years ago, while having a conversation with my mother, she mentioned that one of my great-grandfathers had been born in Canada. Naturally, I grew interested and asked her to tell me a little bit more.
In the course of one afternoon, I learned that my great-great-grandparents Hern were travelling vaudeville performers in Canada and a few northern U.S. states. As a child, my mother had visited some relatives in Toronto but she couldn't recall the names of her cousins, who were significantly older, and I'm not sure how far down the cousin line they were.
Some relatives were as forthcoming as they could be while others clammed up and grew very, very suspicious of me asking the questions. A first cousin has done some research on the family but the rest has been cobbled together from research and asking roundabout questions.
A lot of this has started in Chautauqua County, where I presently live. I've traced relatives to Canada, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Forrest County, Pa.; Toronto and British Columbia, Canada; but nothing solid on Wisconsin yet.
