· The ROSEL, ROSELL, ROSELLE, ROZEL, ROZELL, ROZELLE name comes from the DU ROZEL family in France and England. "The village and lordship of LE ROZEL are in the department of La Manche, in Normandy, about a mile from the sea coast. The château DU ROZEL, which overlooks the village, is a slightly castled mansion with a small tower at the western angle and surrounded by wall, crenellated and flanked with ivied buttresses, which, on the side fronting the sea, opens into an inner court, between two round and half dismantled towers." It goes on to say LE ROZEL implies tower by the water - “Roz”, the Rook or castle in chess (tour) and “el” is a synonym for water (eau).
· The lineage has been traced to the Vikings around 700 BC: According to Stemmata ROSSELLANA, it is of Danish origin, going back to Sveide the Viking in 700.
The first to come to America was a Major John ROSELLE or ROZELL b., in about 1633 or 1641, who came from England and Patrsettled in Westchester Co., NY. The Maj. John ROSSELL theory comes from Hugh ROSSELL's book. The Stemmatta ROSELLANA a book is suggested be used with caution... The Major's descendants settled in NY, NJ, and PA. The DEROSSELL name does appear in NY records and may be of Huguenot origin. Someone said that a family were Huguenots and filed from LA ROCHELLE, France to England and then came to America where they helped to found New ROCHELL, NY in 1688. He thought the family name was ROCHELLE. The spelling varies, and probably some went to Canada. Some families lived in New York before the Revolution but had to go to Canada because they were Loyalists.
The father of a family, Jeremiah ROZELL, born about 1750, arrived with brothers (3-7) in the US but they separated after arriving. He served in the Revoluntionary War. He came from Germany (or France?) "very young", appears in 1790 NY and died in 1825 at 76 years old.
Someone his ancestors are from Ontario by way of New Jersey (before the American Revolution), England after 1066 and France before that
