My Dad, John Carl Ross, was born in Chicago on February 26, 1931, but his father was born in Sweden, and his mother was descended from the Oye Family of Schlesweig-Holstein.My Dad's father's real last name was Rosendahl, but he must have shortened it to Ross when he came to America.Karl Hjalmar Rosendahl was born about March 19, 1896, in Odensvi, Sweden, and he died in Chicago, Illinois on December 22, 1937, in a hit-run car-pedestrian accident. He was the pedestrian..This left my Grandmother, Mary Oye Ross alone with a little boy to support. She worked at a dry cleaner's but made little money to support herself and young son, so when her father, August Oye died in Tuscola, Illinois, she moved back to her hometown and lived with her twin sister, Martha Oye, who had never married. For many years, the two sisters and young man lived at 310 E. Barker St. in Tuscola, Illinois. But in 1952, the young man whose real name was John Carl Ross, and known in school and at work as Carl, was inducted into the U.S. Army, where he became a medic. When he returned from Korea, he went to work at the local chemical plant, where he remained until his retirement in February, 1992. He died of Cancer in Minnesota on September 16, 2000, and is buried in Minnesota. I have contact with a relative in Sweden. I have two sisters, and 1 half-sister, and 1 half-brother. My brother, David, was killed in a motorcycle accident when he was serving in the U.S. Marines, and was aged 21. He and Daddy are buried side by side.
