Ruark Families of Maryland, Indiana, Missouri & California

Updated December 1, 2000

About Our Family Research

I have a document, apparantly prepared by a relative (Frank Vaughn), reflecting my most distant ancestor as Ezekiel Ruark of Maryland, with children Elijah Ruark, Blithay Ruark, Jordan Ruark, Joseph Ruark, Ezekiel Ruark, Elgert Ruark, John Ruark, William Ruark, and Daniel Ruark.

John Ruark married Rachel Esham (or Eshom), and were the parents of Johnson Ruark, Dennis Ruark, Seth Ruark, John Ruark, Isaac Ruark, and Percilla Ruark.

Seth Ruark was born September 22, 1777 (D: Abt. 1831, Indiana), and married Salley Ledman. They were the parents of William Ruark (B: June 6,1802, Worcester Co, MD; D: January 13, 1876 in Lawrence Co, MO), Salley Ruark (B: May 23, 1806), Patty Ruark (B: January 22, 1811), Josias Ruark (B: March 28, 1813; D: November 30, 1822), Mary Ruark (B: October 31, 1815), Harvey Ruark (B: January 14 ?), Dennis Ruark, and Littleton Ruark.

William married (1) Priscilla Johnson (B: June 9, 1793; D: July 24, 1838 in Indiana; M: July 28, 1824), and (2) Margaret Williams (B: March 13, 1818; D: December 23, 1887 in Lawrence Co, MO; M: October 16, 1838, Ripley Co, Indiana).

William Ruark and (1) Priscilla (Johnson) Ruark were the parents of Jesse James Ruark (B: September 15, 1825 in MD; D: July 12, 1894 in Lawrence Co, MO), Henry Ruark (B: August 24, 1827; D: December 24, 1867), Sarah Jane Ruark (B: January 28, 1830), Joshua Ruark (B: June 1, 1832; D: June 6, 1902), and Ozias Ruark (B: April 30, 1835).

William Ruark and (2) Margaret (Wiliams) Ruark were the parents of Martha Elizabeth Ruark (B: November 25, 1839; D: July 23, 1903), Cynthia Ann Ruark (B: April 22, 1841; D: Abt. 1903), Drusilla Ruark (B: July 15, 1842; D: October 9, 1843), William Judson Ruark (B: January 5, 1844; D: April 10, 1903), Margaret Ann Ruark (B: March 6, 1845: D: June 22, 1926), my great-grandfather Francis Marion Ruark (B: February 7, 1847; D: September 6, 1824 in Lawrence Co, MO), Miranda Ruark (B: July 21, 1848; D: September 15, 1850), Mary Lucinda Ruark (B: November 7, 1850; D: June 23, 1882), John Edward Ruark (B: April 27, 1853), Oliver Wayland Ruark (B: March 5, 1859), and Elmer Grant Ruark (B: October 6, 1863; D: August 27, 1938).

William Ruark and his father Seth Ruark, along with their families (and William's future wife Margaret Williams), left Maryland on October 20, 1827 and moved to Indiana, arriving there November 27, 1827. The 1830 census records for Ripley County, Indiana, reflect both Seth and William living in that county in that year. Apparently Seth and his wife Salley (Ledman), along with William's first wife Priscilla (Johnson), died in Indiana. William married (2) Margaret Williams on October 15/16, 1838. Ripley County records verify that marriage in Indiana.

In Apiril 1840, William and Margaret Ruark, along with their children, moved from Indiana to Missouri. It is belived (although not yet verified), that William and his family first settled at what is now known as Ruark Bluff at Stockston Lake, just north of Greenfield, in southwest Missouri. The "Vaughn Record" reflects that William and his family moved to "the valley" on December 28, 1852. That valley is believed to be in Lawrence County, near Miller, Missouri. A log cabin strongly believed to have been built by William still stands in excellent condition.

Surnames associated with my Ruark family through marriage in Missouri are: Sturdy, Newkirk, Ruddick, McClafflin.

Surnames assoicated with my family on my mothers side are Dalton, Penick, Jennings, and Thomas.

While I am interested in obtaining (and providing) information I have obtained in my research on all ancestors, at this time my primary focus of research in on the Ruark's in Indiana and Maryland in an effort to verify and expand on the Vaughn Record, as well as establish links to Ireland.
