I am Gabrielle Ruff, nee Mulcahy.Father Mark Mulcahy mother Anne.I am looking for ancestors of both my father and my mother, and those of my husband,(now dead.)His mother's name was McCarthy, born in or near Tralee or Green Lane,Eire,-her mother may have been called Moriarty-or not! My great-grandfather was William Charlton, born 12June1814,(married Elizabeth Milroy,Sept.1850.)His father was Robert(m. Margaret Wilson 11 Nov.1810.)Robert was a "cattle doctor".This took place at or near Hexham at Lee Saint John,in Northumberland. There are so many Charltons here and at All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne, that I have made no more progress. One ancestor on my mother's side was in Cromwell,s "army of retribution" in the 1600s,-an officer called Hamilton or Hambleton, who left the army after the siege of Drogheda and settled in Wexford marrying into the "gentry"(my nana's word).A descendant, Brian Murphy,in the middle 1800s came to Sunderland,by chance overheard a plot to steal some cattle, warned the farmer, and subsequently worked with him.The latter being childless,Brian inherited the farm.I would appreciate any information whatever about any of the above and of Frederic William Ruff, who may have been born in Jersey, was a music-hall artiste, had a "Magic Palace" in Paris, France whose father was an officer in the French Army during and shortly after the Great War,1914-1918,with whom he had quarrelled and so he is the grandfather my in-laws never knew. The above surnames occur in our family ancestry. It would be interesting to get in touch with anyone who has knowledge of or is related to myfamily ancestors.E-mail "gabrielle@ruffs.org
