I am currently begining research on our ancestors. Specifically, Gregorio Cortez. My father's name is Jesse Ruiz; his father was Augustine Cortez and his father was Gregorio Cortez.
My grandfather was raised as Augustin Ruiz by an with the surname Ruiz. However, when he died, his birth records indicated he was Augustine Cortez. Therefore, his death certificate and his tombstone recognize him as Augustine Cortez.
However, because Augustine was married using the Ruiz surname, his children (including my dad Jesse Ruiz )legally became Ruiz's.
I am now trying to determine whether or not my great grandfather Gregorio Cortez is the legendary "Gregorio Cortez." I am currently at the infant stage of my research.
According to research records Gregorio Cortez was married 3 times. According to my father, his grandfather was also married 3 times. The legendary Gregorio Cortez shot and killed a sherrif in self-defense. My greatgrandfather allegedlly killed someone as well. This was why my grandfather Augustine was raised by a family member.
