About Our Family Research

The family of Craynwell / Cranwell originated from Lincolnshire in England and from whom the Cranwill family of Ballycanew, co. Wexford are believed to have descended.

John Cranwill appears to be the founder of the Cranwill family in Ballycanew. He was born aout 1699/1700 and died in Ballycanew in 1772 although the Cranwell/Cranwill family are said to have been in Ireland since Elizabethan times.

John Cranwill's wife, Miss Nancy Byrne or O’Byrne was descended from the famous Irish Chieftan Feach Mac Hugh O’Byrne, Prince of Glenmalure Co. Wicklow, who defied Queen Elizabeth’s forces, and who hid in his castle at Glenmalure. The noted chieftan Hugh Roe O’Donnell after he had escaped from imprisonment in Dublin Castle and who escorted Hugh on his way to safety in Donegal.
