Our family history so far dates back to John Rutherford (1760-1845) who had 7 children - William, Jean, Thomas, Janet, John, Margaret, and Adam. The family's move from Jedburgh, Scotland began in 1818 when two of his sons - Thomas and John - immigrated to St. Lawrence County in New York with a cousin, Thomas Fife. 2 years later the youngest sibling, Adam, arrived in St.Lawrence County with his young wife and baby daughter. A few years later, the remaining family arrived in St. Lawrence County. They all settled within a short distance of each other and raised their families. This area of St. Lawrence County was already settled by people from the Jedburgh area, to include five earlier Rutherford brothers who began arriving in 1801.Our goal is to research our Rutherford family tree in an effort to find the one common denominator that links all the Rutherfords that immigrated from Jedburgh, Scotland to St. Lawrence County, New York, in the early 1800's.
