Includes NotesNotes for Bernard Grafton Gordon:
See newspaper article about Bernie's drug store in Hamilton.
" A druggist who served as a personal medicine man for two generations of east Hamilton residents died at his Tragina Avenue North home yesteday.
Bernard Gordon, 83, operated Gordon's Pharmacy on Main St East for about 50 years until he retired six years ago. And according to all reports, he ministered to his customers aches and pains with a mixture of medicinal concoctions, old style remedies and lots of free advice about how to live a full, happy life.
In early years, when Mr Gordon and his family lived in an apartment in the back, the store was stocked with such items as moustache wax, plug tobacco, herbs and headache powders.
During the Second World War, Mr Gordon made, packaged and sold ice cream under his own brand naame in the store. he also operated a soda fountain and post office with the pharmacy, which had evolved into a popular social centre.
His daughter , Donna Goodbrand, who had worked at the soda fountain as a teenager, said it would not be an exaggeration to call her father a medicine man because customers sought out his advice on everthyting from headaches to hangnail. He often patched minor cuts, scrapes and bruises and removed splinters.
Despite his retirement, customers continued to consult him at home. Mrs Goodbrand said a man telephoned this week and made an appointment to see Mr Gordon. It was the only appointment he ever missed. He was the last of the corner store druggists, said Mrs Goodbrand. At home he was a quiet shy man but he loved to talk over the counter and tell customers how to take care of themselves and live long healthy lives.
He was the only person I knew who really loved his work and really looked forward to going to work each day. He always said he would live to be a hundred and he never spent a day in hospital in his life or was never under the knife.
Hundreds of former customers , friends and relatives are expected to attend his funeral at 2:30 PM tomorrow at St Columba's Presbyterian Chruch on Main St East.
Born and raised near Newmarket, Mr Gordon is survived by his widow, Dorothy, Mrs Goodbrand and a son, Barney Gordon"
