Richard Atkinson (son of John Atkinson and Jane Watson) was born 18 Nov 1846 in Victoria Square, Ontario, and died 16 Apr 1926. He married Catherine Steckley on 08 Mar 1871.

Richard was born in Victoria Square in 1846 now Elgin Road East. he was nine when the family moved to Whitchurch Twp, Lot 14, Conc 5 now Warden Ave.
After he married to Catherine Stickley in 1871, they lived on a house on the south east corner of that farm for several years. In 1881 richard and Catherin bought her parent's farm (Samuel Steckley and Lydia Baker) Lot 8 Conc%). Catherine's parents built another house on the property. At one time or another, Charles, Clarence, the three aunties all lived in that house.
Clarence took over the farm after Richard died. Clarences son Ray took overthe farm from him. Ray sold the farm in 1988.
Richard Atkinson was a farmer, but was also a busy carpenter. He built many of the big barns throughout Markham and Whitchurch Twps. His sons, Frank, Ralph and Chalres were also great carpenters. Frank and Ralph spent all their lives as carpenters. They lived in Richmond Hill
The year 1900 was traumatic for Richard as his son David died at age 20 after a farm accident which seemed very minor at the time. Four days after his death, his mother Catherine age 48, died of shock. The eldest daughter, Selena at age 23 became mother to the family. One brother had been married, but 2 brothers 28 and 26 were at home. There were three teen agers , 19,16, and 14, one brother 10, one brother eight, and one sister 6.
Two of Richards boys became ministers.
Herbert Atkinson graduated from Moody Bible College, Chicago in 1924.
Levi Atkinson graduated from Victoria College and Toronto Bible College and entered the ministry in 1917. He spent several years among the Cree at Oxford House Manitoba. His churches included postings at Oxford House, Hornepayne Ont, Mindemoya Ontario, Windermere Ont, Stouffville Ont, Uxbridge Ont, Caledon East Ont, and Brampton Ontario.
Edith graduated from Chatauqua Shool of Nursing New York in 1913 from the Nursing at Home branch , Toronto Mission Union in 1916 and from TBC in 1918. She nursed in Sydney Nova Scotia and was a deaconess in Toronto for several years.
Levi, Frank, Ralph, Charles and Flossie all died suddenly from heart attacks.
Selena taught Sunday School in the same church for three generations.
