SAMUEL CLEVELAND SARGEANT k/a (CLIFF)

Mildred--When Clifford was born, mother made all the baby clothes and she made a Barrow coat to keep the tiny baby's feet warm. It was of soft gray flannel, with a wide band to go around the waist and it was fastened by safety pins. They don't have them today.

A baby that was born before him, was also called Samuel Cleveland. The first baby had a cleft palate and hare lip and died shortly after birth. He was buried in St James Cemetery in Owen Sound.

Why he was called Cliff, I don't know. When Dyson, his grandson, asked his wife why he was called Cliff, she didn't know, but pointed out that no one dared him anything but Cliff. When he was born the mid-wife was Effie McMillan, Henry Sargeant's wife.

He married Mary Amanda Brownscombe ( -18 May 1979), daughter of James Brownscombe 1068 4th Ave E at Westside Parsonage Owen Sound on the 18th of December 1919. The pastor was Rev C M Marshall. There is a charming picture of Cliff and Mary seated in a field of daisies in the photo section.

They had two children: William (known as Bill to his immediate family, but as Billie to his uncles) of Belleville, and Kay , Mrs Robert Henderson of Owen Sound.

Cliff was a cabinet maker and worked for the Harrison Mill in Owen Sound. He was in the trade for 34 years. He was an employee of National Table for 24 years and the RCA Victor Co for five years. His son Bill had some of the furniture he made and this is now in the possession of his wife's brother, Vern Stickley of Rexdale.

He was a member of Central United Church and was a keen sportsman, particularly of hunting and fishing.

Died of cancer, the 6th of Nov 1952, buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound.

Roseline - "A down to earth good brother
Liked to play the violin and do his own tunes.
Developed snaps.
Clifford had red hair.
We had an old Chevy which he undertook to polish and keep in good order. One night he borrowed Dad's car and attended a dance in a home three miles from us. It was late at night and Dad thought it was time Cliff was home, but no Cliff appeared on the scene. Dad made his way walking to this particular home. Our Chevie was in the yard and Dad stepped in the car and brought it safely home leaving Cliff to find his way to our little stone house before he could get some sleep. I don't think he ever got a scolding.
In the winter months we liked to romp. Cliff was on the couch and tried to keep the rest of us from getting on that couch with a pillow. What an hillarious scramble! Pillow flying became part of it. Children heeded not my dear little mother's warnings , so she called in Papa Sargeant who was cutting wood in the woodshed. Was there ever a scramble! Cliff got under the dining room table, Grace found a hiding place and Dow disappeared also. I stood at dining room table and Dad came straight to me and pulled my ear "Where is Cliff?" says he. Cliff popped out from under the table. No strap came off the hook, no one was spanked, no loud threats if I recall correctly. All that we needed was just a word from Dad. The Frolic ceased. There was a great calm."[SargeantFamilyTree.FBK]
