My mother was born Isabella Colthart, in Fife, Scotland, in 1911. Her mother was Jessie Miller of Thurso, Scotland. Unmarried, Jessie bore three children to William Colthart (born illegitimate in Lesmahagow, Scotland, in 1862). My mother was one of three (known) Colthart children: Isabella (1911), Jessie (1913) and William (born and died 1915). In 1917, Jessie married William James Reynolds or McReynolds); at one time she had care of two Reynolds' children (possibly they were also her own): Thomas (born 1917) and Catherine (born 1920). Reynolds died accidentally in Greenock, in 1919, aged 38. In 1920, Jessie hooked up again with (and married) William Colthart in Blythswood-Glasgow; he had been married once before, in 1891, to Jane Nicol (mother’s name: Mair); they later divorced and she may have emigrated to Canada. In 1925, Colthart died of cancer. My Mum died in 1992. So far, my own research has turned up Colthart's birth, marriage(s) and death certificates; my Mum's birth, marriage(s) and death certificates; Reynolds' marriage and death certificates; the birth cert. of Margaret Allan Colthart (William's sister, or half-sister), who married and later was widowed to John Arroll (1856-1925); she emigrated (?) to the USA (date unknown, possibly circa 1925) and died there in 1930. Part of her Colthart lineage currently lives in Ohio. William is believed to have had other siblings. He was a scoundrel and spent most of his life in jail (12 known convictions in 40 years, 9 of them documented). Isabella, my Mum, married Alan Charles Lusty, in Surrey, in 1938; later she divorced. In 1948 she married my father, Frederic Chapuisat, in Bedminster, NJ, USA; she also divorced him (circa 1956). Am looking for other Colthart or Reynolds survivors (UK, USA or elsewhere).
