John went to work in a coal factory to help support the family. He was unable to attend school until he got a little older. He took every effort to gain an education thoughout his life. When he was 18, he learned to play the violin and became a fine musician. He later purchased an organ for his family. He became one of the leading musicians in Payson . Two of his little boys learned the violin and played with him on many occasions. He was the church organist for many years. John , his mother, and two brothers joined the Church in 1852 . They were advised to emigrate to the Valley. Due to lack of funds, his two brothers, James and George , went first and then worked to help John and the rest of the family emigrate. When they arrived, they settled in Little Cottonwood . John spent one winter helping guard the valley when Johnston 's army came. When he returned, he moved his family to Springville , where they lived until the fall of 1859 when they moved to Moroni . Later they moved to Payson where John invested in a saw mill with his sons.
