My Great Grandfather (Jacob Schmidt) came to Canada with his wife Anna and three children, from Satulmare, Bukowina, then a Province in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They arrived in Balgonie, Saskatchewan, in the spring of 1891. Jacob served in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, he was wounded and was discharged with the rank of sergeant.
They were married in Bukowina and had eleven children, eight of the children died in their youth (three in one year). They are all buried in Bukowina. The three surviving children Regina, Henry and Johanna accompanied their parents to Canada.
Jacob and Anna resided on a homestead near Balgonie, until a Anna suffered a stroke, leaving her partially paralyzed. They then moved to Edenwald, Saskatchewan to live with their daughter Regina and husband Karl Mang, where they resided until their deaths. Jacob was very active and robust, he handled a four-horse team and helped work the land until he was 88 years of age.
Their son Henry (my Grandfather) was born May 6, 1883 at Satulmare, Bukowina. He died of typhoid fever August 1, 1907 at the age of 24. Henry had married Magdelena Huber at Edenwald, February 15, 1906, they had one son Henry Frederich (my Dad), born December 10,1906.
Henry F. married Katherine Huber (my Mother), October 16,1932 at Serath, Saskatchewan. They had 5 children, Irvin Harold, Irene Ethal, Lawrence Oswald (Me), Iris Joyce and Lloyd Allan.
Lawrence Oswald 'Lawrie' was born August 19,1936 at Serath, Sask., the family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1940.
Lawrie married Shirley Killoh in Regina on October 26,1956. They had three sons Paul 'Curtis', Craig Douglas and James 'Cameron'.
Curtis was born in Regina on January 27, 1958. Lawrie and Shirley moved to Calgary, Alberta on December 1,1959. Craig was born April 18,1961 and Cam was born April 2, 1963. The family still resides in Calgary.
Curtis married Sigrid Jacobson and they have three sons, Cale, Zachary and Quentin. Craig married Shelley Stephen, they have two sons, Travis and Wade. Cameron married Dixie Berthot, they have a son Colton and a daughter Kirstin. They all live in Calgary, Alberta.
