The Greiner family was among the first families that settled in the area of Georgia that later became Screven County. After the first two or three generations, the name was spelled Griner. Many present-day residents are descendants of this early family, including Sheriff John Griner, who is a member of the tenth generation of the family to live in Screven County.
The history of the Greiner family is documented back to the thirteenth century in Austria. At that time, the county was called the Archduchy of Austria and there is a village there called Grein, located on the Danube River between Linz and Vienna. This was where the Greiner family name originated. In 1262 a glass factory was built at Walkersbach in the Ducy Of Wurttenberg, forty miles east of what is now Stuttgart, Germany. The Greiners were brought there to manage the factory by the Duke of Wurttenberg. There were many glass factories built in this area known as Shurwald and the Greiners were managers of many of them. They were also foresters and farmers in this area. From here they spread over many parts of the world.
The ancestor of the Griners in Screven County came first to South Carolina with the settlers of Purrysburg on the Savannah River near what is now Hardeeville. He came from a village on the Rhine. The exact time of arrival is not clear at this time; but it is most likely that he arrived on the ship "Two Brothers", commanded by Captain William Thomason, which landed in April 1735. A Mrs. Greiner was working as a seamstress at Mrs. Samuel Glaser's on Broad Street in Charleston on May 31, 1735, according to a newspaper article.
It is documented that John Greiner applied for land, and a survey was done on September 27, 1735 for 400 acres in the township of Purrysburg. There was another 400-acre tract and a town lot also granted under the name of John Greiner. After many years of hard times and sickness, Purrysburg disappeared. The people who survived this very trying time moved to other areas. Members of the Greiner family applied for land in Georgia on November 29, 1752 and was granted land in St. George Parish. These grants were along the Savannah River in the area where Hwy. 301 now crosses the river, north to Sweetwater Creek in what is now Burke County.
There were many other land grants in the same area over the next twenty years. Several other families who were land holders in Purrysburg also had land granted in the same area. The area grew rapidly and was called Halifax District. There were many from the area who were of German ancestry, whether from the Swiss-German settlement of Purrysburg or the Salzburger settlement at Ebenezer, or the Bethany Colony, another German settlement on the Savannah River just north of Ebenezer. These people were hard working and determined to carve out a living in this new land.
Probably half of the people now living in Screven County are descended from these early Greiners. The early Greiner girls married into the following families: Bazemore, Boykin, Bragg, Chance, Connor, Hodges, Hughes, Jenkins, Lariscy, McCall, Mock, Parker, Robbins, Rouse, Roberts, Rossiter, Sasser, Scott, Smith, Taylor, Usher, Waters and Weber, and many more families are connected in some way.
The Greiner who came from a village on the Rhine to Purrysburg was Johann Caspar Greiner (which translates into English as John Casper Griner). He came with his wife and three sons and other family members. The number of females is not clear.
