William Griner enlisted as a Private in Company, 5th Regiment Georgia State Troops on October 14, 1861. Mustered out April 1862. Enlisted as a Private in Company D, 54th Regiment Georgia Infantry, January 27, 1863. Muster roll dated February 28, 1863 is the only roll on file, shows him present. Pension records show he was wounded in the head at Atlanta, Georgia on July 22, 1864. He was sent to a hospital and remained there two weeks. He was at home on wounded furlough at the close of the war.
