Seawells Pooles Johnsons and Buies

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

The Seawell family traces it's beginnings in the United States through Judge Samuel Sowell of 17th Century Mass. Our branch of the family came to North Carolina in the late 18th or early 19th Century. Judge A. A. F. Seawell, Jr. (1864-1950)served on the N.C. Supreme Court. He married Bertha Smith and was the father of seven children.

My father Malcolm Buie Seawell married Frances Bruton Poole in 1936 and practiced law in Lumberton, N.C. where he also served as mayor, solicitor, district judge and later at Attorney General of North Carolina.

My maternal grandparents were James Robert Poole and Pearle Johnson Poole. I know that both families trace their maternal relations through the family name Buie, a Scottish name from 18th Century Scottish settlers in the sandhills of North Carolina.
