Notes for Fannie Robertson: The story that Fannie told to her granddaughter goes like this: " When I was very young, my parents died and I was shuffled from kin to kin. Most just didn't want me at all, but to those that I did stay with, I was to earn my keep. I did housework and fieldwork, I was not treated like a family member but like a slave. Their children was aloud to boss me around and I learned that I had better do their bidding. My name was Rachel but while living with one of the families they decided that Rachel was too "good" for me and renamed me Fannie. That is what I have used since. My father went off to war and I don't remember ever seeing him again. I was told that he had been killed in battle. My mother had already died."
