My paternal grandmother, Mertis Allen of Rosepine, Louisiana married Shelby Cole of De Ridder, Louisiana in the 1920's. They moved to Texas and in 1928 had one son, Shelby Cole, Jr., my father. He married my mother, Velma Marie Kerr and they had six children. I am trying to create a family website for our family that will tell the story of our heritage on all sides of the family and will appreciate all the help I can get from other people doing similar research. I have already had the good fortune to meet on the web, 2 people , now known to me as third cousins. What a treat. I met and married John C. Self in 1969 who happened to be born in Los Angeles, Calif. Only to find out that his father Robert Patrick Self was born and reared in Nachitoches, Louisiana with a most interesting family history as well. I have now discovered that the Allens intermarried at one point with the Selfs and we were probably distantly related when we got married. What a coincidence or was it fate?
