John Ashley (son of William (or John) Ashley and ?) was born 28 December 1777 in Catskill, New York, and died 15 October 1843 in New York State. He married Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of Joseph Johnson and Phebe ?.

"Grandfather was born Dec. 28, 1777. He lived in Catskill, New York. He married Elizabeth Johnson, one of a large family of Hartford, Conn. she was born May 27, 1773. She said her grandmother brought to Conn. the first small spinning-wheel used there. The Johnsons (originally Johnstones) were some of the first Pilgrims who came from England. " "Grandfather wanted his children near him. For that purpose, he bought a large tract of land in Indiana, near Ft. Wayne. He sold his property in New York State and moved there with his family in May 1837. Polly Ashley Griswold was the first one of his children who followed him. All of his children except John Joseph finally went there." "Of grandfathers children, none are living except Rebecca Jeffries." (from "Ashley Record" written by Jane A. Potter in 1900.)
