Notes for George Roberts Wilkinson: Maria Smith married George R. Wilkinson in Lancaster County, PA, March 20, 1845. Maria and George pioneered westward to Belmont, Ohio - just a few miles west of Wheeling, West Virginia...here they lived for ten years. Maria didn't want to bring up a growing family in a "little town" so they again moved west and in 1855, July 4, crossed over into Iowas where they located in Muscatine County. They established their home 1 1/2 miles (one mile north and a half mile east) of Atalisa. When they arrived in Iowa, there were three children - Eleanora, Gilpin, and Gulielma, who was just a baby. ...George R. Wilkinson was a member of the Grand Templars Union - a temperance society. Wilkinson had a total of six children...Eleanora, Gilpin, Gulielma, Alice, Lucette, and Anna Maria....Eleanora, Gilpin, Gulielma were born in Belmont, Ohio...and Alice, Lucette, and Anna Maria were born in Iowa.....In 1936, Gilpin Wilkinson was living in Iowa City, IA...Alice Wilkinson Sparks, a widow,Lucette Wilkinson, a retired physician, and Anna Maria Wilkinson Gorman, with her husband Wilfred Morgan Gorman were living in Long Beach, California. Gulielma Wilkinson dropped the first half of the name recorded in the family bible and became "Elma". Gulielma was named after William Penn's wife and is the latin Feminine of Gulielmus...which means William.

George and Maria were distant cousins. George was the great-grandson of Alice Smith; Maria was the great-granddaughter of John Smith, the brother of Alice. In 1845, when George and Maria asked permission to marry, George's Meeting refused. At any rate, they went ahead, and George said the best thing he ever did in his life was to marry Maria Smith.
