John Ashley, Jr., was born in New York State on December 28, 1777. His father was John Ashley, Sr. and both his father and mother came from England.
John and Elizabeth (Johnson) Ashley were married in about 1799, and lived in Catskill, New York which is in Green County until May, 1837 when they moved to Allen County, Indiana. Their daughter, Polly and her husband, Riley Griswold, probably had already made the move to Allen County, Indiana.
Catskill lies at the junction of Katskill Creek with the Hudson River. In the 1881's, it had apopulation of 5,000 people. John Ashley, Jr. was an early settler of this area.
In "The Pictoral History of Fort Wayne, Indiana" by Griswold, Volume 1, 1917, it is written about the early settlers in Allen County, Indiana in Maumee Township. In this book on page 678, Polly's father, John Ashley, Jr. and her brother, George Ashley, are mentioned as early settlers.
"In 1836, the principal settlers at this time, in addition to those who have been mentioned, were James Johnson, Washington Corpse, J.N. Sweet, Charles Harding, Benjamin Johnson, James Shirley, ......Flint,.....Crapeau, and John and George Ashley, father and son. The latter pair come from Catskill, New York, and planned to build a mill. They cleared a tract of land, and began the erection of the building, but the difficulty of constructing the necessary dam across the Maumee river loomed large and too discouraging, so they abandoned the project midway, the senior Ashley returning to his former home."
After the death of John Ashley,Jr.'s wife Elizabeth, John returned to Catskill, New York and died there a year later at the home of his daughter, Phoebe. He died on October 15, 1843 and perhaps was buried in Catskill.
