George Hale Ashley came to Indiana with his father, John Ashley, Jr., in 1836 at the age of 22 and bought a half section of wild land. He built a cabin on his land and improved it for seven years. He was an intelligent, well-educated man and his wife, Esther Linzey, worked diligently with him as all pioneer women had to do.
