My mother was number four in a family of six, daughter of James Arnot Master Slater born in Glasgow Scotland on the 29th of August 1878. His parents were registered as William Arnot and Margaret Greig who were married in Baltimore in 1875. The child James was left in Scotland and adopted by a family called Short who may or may not be related although the adoption appears to have been organised prior to the birth. James birth was registered by his mother Margaret Greig and the name Short was also marked on the birth Cetificate. There has always been a lot of family conjecture about James birth and in fact until the marriage for William and Margaret was discovered we thought he was illegitimate. We still feel there is something odd to be discovered. We are also anxious to find if there is a link between the Shorts and the Arnots and if the Arnot marriage endured after the birth
