My name is Alvaro S. Socarrás Sanchez Garcia. I was born in the Province of Camagüey, Cuba. I also have the Garcia Rojas y Loret de Mola surnames. I have a family tree that states that Gabriel Socarrás Fleites Cervellón é Infante arrived at Puerto Principe (Camagüey province, Cuba) from the Canary Islands in the early part of the XVII century. I was also told by an ancestry "expert" from Spain that the name Socarrás was originally spelled Socarrat, from Cataluña, Spain and that it means "burned". I also heard that it could be, with a different spelling, of French origin. At the end of the 10 years war in Cuba (1968-1978) my Great-grandfather, Rosendo Socarrás Zaldivar, had to leave Cuba after the failure of this Movement to emancipate the island from the Spanish-crown's grip. He went into exile to NYC, NY, USA where he died in destitute. I do not have any details of his place of burial. My Grandparents in my Father side migrated, at the end of the XIX century, to Key West and Tampa, FL, USA. Around the early 1950s my grandmother (Maria A. Socarrás Garcia) told me that 2 of her children were borne at the time when the family was still living in the US. I met one of them, my aunt Clara Socarrás Garcia. They returned back to Cuba after living in the US and indeterminate amount of years. I also met one of my father's cousins, surnamed Garcia, during the late 40s and 50s when they use to visit us in Havana, Cuba. I went to see them later in Tampa, FL in 4/1959. I would like to exchange info. with anybody interested. I also speak Spanish. Sincerely, Al
