Dear Ms Brzezinski,
Your request of Sister Helene Hayes in Jamaica, New York for information about your great aunt has been referred here. Our Sioux City convent was in this St. Paul province, and records on the decased Sisters are here.
The rather sketchy information we have about Sister Mary Agnes Lehner is as follows:
* Born October 31, 1873, Josephine Lehner.
* Made vows as a Sister of the Good Shepherd in St. Paul September 8, 1896. Name in religion: Sister Mary Agnes.
* Was what we termed a "touriere sister". This meant, as your family understood, that she took care of outside business because the Sisters at that time were semi-cloistered. The work of the touriere sisters actually allowed the activities and ministries of the convent to go forward.
* In the early 1950's her service is related as "disabled," which means she must have spent several years as an invalid before her death. Our records, including cemetery records, show her date of death as May 17, 1954, not May 7.
* She is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City.
I did extensive research for more details on your great aunt but find nothing more. I hope what we do have is of some help to you.
Sincerly,
Sister Marjorie Hamilton
Acting Archivist - St. Paul Province
