* Al Sosa's Hispanic Genealogy Page*

Updated September 5, 2000

Al Sosa, first president of the Hispanic Genealogical Society of New York (HGSNY), co-founder of the Compuserve Hispanic Genealogy section and Host of the Hispanic Genealogy Internet Forum, is interested in learning more about the Sosa clan.
The Sosas emigrated from Portugal to Spain then to the new world.
In Portugal the Sosas spelled their surname Sousa and were de Sousa. The surname originated from the name of a river which flows near the ancient city of Oporto in northern Portugal.

Anyone coming from the region around the river Sousa would be termed "de Sousa". That being the case their are both noble and non-noble families which carry this name. The spelling was changed when the families entered Spain and became "de Sosa".

I am interested in any information on these families, especially the noble families from Portugal.
