re. the question e-mailed to Blackacre Foundation on 8 November 2002
Hello Anne
I have done some further research based on your last information and
now
believe that you are a descendent of the Blackacre Tyler family.
Your
Presley, born 1821, was probably the son of William Tyler and his
wife Polly
Jevodan. William was born about 1784 in Jefferson County, Ky., and
is
believed to be the twin brother of Moses Tyler Jr. They were two of
the
eleven sons of Moses Sr. and his wife Phebe Evans. Moses Sr.
established the
first farm at Blackacre, a barn and stone house remain from his time
period.
The first claimant to the land itself was Edward Tyler, Moses'
father, but
Edward never actually lived on the Blackacre portion of his 1,000
acre claim.
Moses' youngest son, also named Presley Tyler, was given the farm by
his
father in return for Moses' care in his old age. Presley built the
brick
farmhouse that stands today at Blackacre.

William Tyler and Polly Jevodan (?) were married in Shelby County,
Ky. in
1808 (William's uncle Robert Tyler lived there) and by 1830 they had
moved to
Jennings County, Ind. By comparing court records, census records,
and family
tradition I have concluded that William and Polly had two sons who
survived
to adulthood: Allen, born about 1812, and Presley. They also more or
less
adopted Louisa Tyler, born 1814 in Jefferson County, Ky., the
orphaned
daughter of William's brother Moses. Louisa married Thomas Wilkerson
in
Jennings Co., in 1832. In 1841 William found himself in a difficult
position
financially and in April of that year he mortgaged $62 worth of
personal
property to Presley in order to pay a debt. Presley married Lurana
Talkington, as you said, 28 Oct. 1841. Allen married Sally Hiner in
Jennings
Co. on 29 Aug 1841. William Tyler died in 1848/9 and by 1850 Presley
had
left Jennings County. Following William's death there is
considerable court
activity involving Presley, Allen, and Thomas Wilkerson but their
relationship to the deceased William is never stated. I can only
surmise.

The ages of William, Polly, Presley, and Allen do not exactly match
those
given for them in the 1830 Indiana census but since I feel certain
the ages
of William and Polly are wrong I think it is safe to assume that the
census
taker was less than accurate. But they do appear to be in the same
household. In the 1850 census Allen is still in Jennings with his
wife Sarah
"Sally" and five young children. In the same census there
are two other men
named Tyler - Daniel and James. I have not been able to connect them
to
William and think they are probably unrelated.

I may have created more questions for you than I have answered but
that your
Presley was the son of William and Polly I have little doubt.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Joellen
