Notes for Marion De Kalb Smith: Marion D. Smith enrolled and was mustered into service at Peoria, Iowa, as a private on the 23 day of July 1862 in Company E, 33rd Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Commanded by Captain John P. Walker in the war of the Rebellion (1861---Civil War). He died of disease incurred in the service of the United States in the Regimental Hospital at Helena, Arkansas on 7 August 1863. (Ref: Letter from Adjutant General's Office, dated 2 Dec. 1863, acknowledging receipt of application for pension No. 34713 by Eliza A. Smith. She was subsequently granted a pension of $8 per month per certificate No. 21878 dated 13 May 1864.)
