Our family tree project was resurrected in December 2002. I took the family tree I had created in the mid-1990s and combined the names on that tree with those names my cousin Paul Gluck had on the tree he had created a few years ago.
I made a list of the names on both trees and sent the list to dozens of relatives as an attachment to an e-mail message. I asked everyone to look at the list and fill in whatever information they could. I then began creating a new family tree — a "super tree" — that spreads out in many directions.
I also began creating our family Web site, scanning family photographs for inclusion on the site, searching Internet sites for information about our ancestors, posting messages on genealogy bulletin boards (discussion forums), sending e-mails messages to people who might be able to add names to our family tree, and searching ships' passenger lists, census microfilms, and Ellis Island records.
In addition to Web pages with photographs or genealogical, historical, or bibliographical information, I created a bulletin board and a chat room for the site. The bulletin board is a place where people searching for relatives with names found in our family tree can post messages, where information of a topical nature can be shared, where we can tell others our good news, or our sad news. The chat room is a place where we can meet and carry on "conversations" — rather than having a three-way or four-way telephone call, a group of us can enter the chat room at an agreed-upon time, and carry on a "conversation" by typing messages.
