About Our Family Research

The name HOLZENSPIESS first appears with the birth of Wilhelm on 11 Mar 1725, the son of Johannes Henrich HOLZENSPIESS who was living at Hilgert, Germany. On 14 July 1747 Johannes married Anna Catherina REMBS in Grenzhausen, Hessen-Nassau, Germany. This marriage produced 8 offspring including Jacob, born 11 October 1763 at Grenzhausen. Jacob married Anna Maria BERGER on 22 Nov 1789 in Grenzhausen and they had a son, Jacob Wilhelm SPIESS born 30 June 1798. Sometime around then the surname was changed from HOLZENSPIESS to SPIESS. Jacob married Johanna Marie KLAUER in Grenzhausen on 12 February 1826 and their offspring included Wilhelm SPIES who was born 15 December 1826 in Hohr-Grenzhausen, Hessen-Nassau, Germany. Wilhelm emigrated to the United States of America, arriving at the Port of New Orleans 28 December 1854. He traveled up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri, and thence to St. Clair County, Illinois, settling in Belleville, Illinois, where he married Katherina Wilhelmina MERKELBACH in St. Paul Evangelical Church on 14 December 1856. Their union produced six children, including Otto Emil SPIES, born 19 August, 1860 in Belleville. Otto married Lina JUNGHAENE on 17 October 1885 and among their three children was Walter Emil SPIES, born 27 August 1893. Walter married Amanda Barbara WILD on 2 April 1917 and among their three children was a daughter, Wildamae Carolyn SPIES, born 17 February 1927. Wildamae married Francis Lee Brestal on 11 September 1948 and their marriage produced three offspring, namely; Barbara Lee, Berkeley Jean, and Brooks Kevin. Wildamae did the research on this family, and is the writer of this narrative.
