My name is Douglas Wayne Spoon, I'm 45 years old and I live in Temple City, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. Members of the Spoon family moved west from Kansas in the 1920s. My great grandfather, John Alvin Spoon, was a farmer in the Lucas, Kansas area in the late 1800s before moving to California. My genealogy research centers on his ancestors, especially his father, Henry Spoon, who has proven to be a fascinating yet mysterious character. Henry Spoon lived in Hendricks County, Indiana in the mid-1800s, when he married Sarah Catherine Reitzel and raised several children on a farm there. At some point, Henry had trouble with alcohol and ended up in the Indiana Hospital for the Insane. He died there trying to escape one day in 1877. I have learned this through extensive research, yet I am still unclear who his parents were. Family records include the name David Spoon, born late 1700s or early 1800s, in North Carolina. I have found a couple David Spoons but have been unable to connect David and Henry. Thus I continue to search my roots in this area, hoping to make a connection with three Spoon brothers I have been told sailed to America from Germany in the early 1700s.
