About Our Family Research

Family dates to Moriah, New York all the way back, as far as we know, to Great Uncle Henry, a Civil War veteran. Great grandfather Charles Sprague (wife Nellie Phinney Sprague) was a miner of Iron Ore (as were all of his sons)and a farmer. Nellie and Charles (who was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Port Henry, New York) had nine children - Flora (husband Carl Judge-died in 1970), Leon (unmarried - died 1986), Gertrude (husband Howard Thornton - died in 2004), Lloyd (wife Eleanor, died in 1982), Paul (nicknamed "Barney - wife Louise - died in 2006), Gordon (wife Elsie - died in 1988), Vernon (nicknamed "Peck" - wife Jean - died in 2002), Kathleen Sprague (companion Donald Tansey - she died in 1987), and Marjorie (husband Bill Ruth - she died in 2004). All nine children are dead and gone now - only Louise (Paul's wife), Donald Tansey, Jean (Peck's wife), Bill Ruth, and Elsie (Gordon's wife) survive. Gertrude had two children - Dale Thornton who died a few years ago, and Nancy West who is still alive. Flora had a son by an earlier marriage and I believe his name was Russell Sargent but I believe he has passed on. Kathleen and Leon had no children. Lloyd had a son named Donald and a daughter Andrea (Wright) who both are still alive. My name is Dale and I am Donald's son and oldest child of six (David, Lynn, Lisa, Kevin, Karen). Paul had four sons all of whom still are alive, Tracy, Timmy, Randy, and Howie. Gordon had a son (Jeffrey) and daughter (Mary Frances) who still survive. Vernon has a son Derek, and daughters Dianne (Lashway), Jeannie (LeClair), Lori, and Joni (Burkett). Lori is also married - I do not know her married name. Marjorie had four daughters all of whom survive - Kandace (husband Larry), Kathy (husband Bob), Kim (husband Tom), and Kris. I am not sure of their married names. I have lost count of each grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family homestead still is well kept and inhabited by Don Tansey in Moriah, New York on the farm on the Fairy Lake Road overlooking Lake Champlain and the village of Moriah.
