Abner Adams (Dinwiddie Co. VA) to DC 6 Dec 1829 by Pompey: "Dear Sir--when yours enclosing $300 arrived I was not at home, and after I got home, while readign your letter. Crook came up--I told him from whom I received the letter I held in my hand, and the subject--he said your waggoneer--Pompey had just passed his house and informed him of it, and stated from his previous knowledge of him, he did not believe what he had told him--and that he (Crook) had come up for the purpose of taking out an attachment in order to make his money on the return of Pompey--I then read your letter to him and so strictly scrutinized him on the subject--that he said if I would administer, he would take an oath that he never received one cent of the acct--He also stated that Bennehan's Jerry had told him that Pompy did draw the sum of the money from Messrs. [Durius?], but never paid it over to him--I did not administer the oath because I considered it would be extrajudicial. Crook also said he wished me to inform you that Pompy had offered to sell him wheat--at his request I state it--you can pay what attention to it you please--as I could get no clue by which I could know the facts--and as the Law allows no credit to the statement of negroes for in opposition to a white man's I thought it best (though I did it with reluctance) to pay him the amt as the enclosed receipt indicates--Crook said he was now fully satisfied that no blame could be properly attached to you for the delay of payment, but your misplaced confidence in Pompy--in this as in all cases of a similar character entrusted to me--I have acted as I would have doen for myself--which if it should be satisfactory to you--so far from regarding it as trouble, it has afforded me pleasure, and not the less, because you are 'a stranger.'
