Listed on PC's 1848 slave list for Person Co.

He may have been the slave whom Duncan Cameron brought with him from Virginia when he first moved to Orange County [Pied. Plant p. 111]

PCC to DC (Ral) 10 Jan 1830: "We have now only to kill the hogs at the Brick House in Orange and 50 in Person. Mr. Suit sent down 21 last night. Mother sent me to Person the first of the present week to prevent the killing of Hogs in case the weather did not justify it fearing that the presence of Joe and Jack might influence Mr. Clements as the waggons have gone up twice. And it was well that I went up. For the fires were actually made and the weather did not by no means justify doing so. Your man Jim Ray was long and lound in opposition to the slaughter. I think him a man of good judgment. The wheat at the two places has come up well and the fields look quite green"

PCC to DC (Raleigh) 3 Feb 1836: "The last tree in your new ground will fall tomorrow. They have cleared at least 20 acres--of first rate tobacco land. Jim has made a great push 'before meazels took him--"

PCC (Hillsb) to RC (Ral) 21 May 1836: "I remained two days at the plantations, all well with the exception of my man Strephon who has been quite sick. I must deliver a speach that Jim Ray made me. 'Master Paul I am a ruined man my 'Mistis' is gone too far from me; and my old master has forgotten that he owns so black a negro as Jim."

James Cothran to Mr. Cameron (DC?) 1840 [?]: "sir at the Request of William danel I had a chat with Jim Ray in Regard to the Claim found among his farthers papers Jim says thar was five mars put to Mr. Luis danels. Jack from the Clemons plase and foor from the mil quarter about 1832 as near as he can recolect that three of the mars proved with fold at the Clemons plase and he thinks one from the mil plantation he is not sur of the one from the mil plantation of his own recolection but philop says thar was one proved in fold which wood mak the foor mars old unkle James Satterfild Recolicks the three at the Clemons plase I well Remember that Mr danels Requested me to name the matter to you if I ever saw you after that I don't recolect but named it to your son paul he appeared to know nothing about it--I am as well as I can expect for my time of life."

W. Piper (Fairntosh) to Mr. Cameron (PCC?) 8 Oct 1842: "Robin is here to night from Person he says there is two girls sick at Jim Rays, he does not know what the disease is under shich they labour, he says the doctor has been to see them and they are much better, Bill Green went up today when he returns tomorrow I will hear the particulars Grace is he says is about as usual Robin does not know the name of the girls--he says they have cut all their tobacco except a little at the mill quarter Jim Ray is down cutting also"

W. Piper (Fairntosh) to PCC (Ral) 11 Oct 1842 by Jim: "Dr. Webb letter to Mr. Bennehan explains the health of the people at Home, Eno, & Bobbitts I was with him at Bobbitts this morning Polly's child is very sick taken last night suddenly The Dr. says he thinks from the way it complains it has considerable pain in the chest he gave it calomel and gave directions to Nelly how to manage it I will see it again this evening."

W. Piper (Fairntosh) to PCC (Ral) 31 Oct 1842: "Jim Ray has tried for several days and has got but 44 hogs up. I gave him your wishes about the wheat crop and all other business they are sowing wheat and gathering corn"

W. Piper to PCC (Ral) 19 Nov 1842: "I sent to Person 28 12 bushels of Rye, 11 Frocks for small girls, their frock patterns to Mrs. Ann Camerons weomen & 12 jackets to Jim Rays men."

W. Piper to PCC (Ral) 22 Nov 1842 by George: "Mr. Moon left here yesterday morning with Judge Ruffin Salt, boxes, crate, [h?ggs?] he brought down previous which were delivered to Esther, and some apple trees to Jim..."

W. Piper to DC (Ral) 7 Jun 1843 by Squire: " Jim sends you 8 chickens 21 eggs and a few cherries. The chisels sent to Solomon are not of the kind he wanted he wants four strong morticing chisels 1 24 inches wide--we need some whet stones for the harvest 69 yds tow cloth, 12 yds of the striped."

PCC (Fairn) to DC (Ral) 21 Sep 1843: "Mr. Nichols was here on Sunday he reports all well & that the ??? has improved a little and that the crop of tobacco looks well--he says much the [best?]"

PCC to DC (Ral) 24 Sep 1844 by Squire: "I promised Mr. Smeeds to send him what bacon I could spare & I now send Squire down with it--100 Hams which I wish Davy to deliver--& for which he is to pay me 10 cents-- Squire will take you a good load of fodder from Bobbitts...Jim is to go along with Squire with 2 cows as you ordered--"

Anne Cameron (Fairn) to PCC (Marengo, Ala) 5 Dec 1844: "Jim Ray was down on Saturday last, to see upon your uncle, and reported "all well."
