The younger Brown members, Houston Sterling & Leora Curry made Rockford their home in the 1930s after leaving their native city of Clarkskdale, Mississippi. Houston Sterling came to Rockford in 1936 and started work with Gunite Division. He later married Ruth Easterling and they started a family. Leora Curry moved to Rockford shortly thereafter, married Bill (Pork Chop) Sherod and they started a family. In the late 1940s or early 1950s, my grandmother Annie & my great-aunt Clara joined Houston and Leora in Rockford. By that time, my great-grandfather Harry Brown was deceased so my great-grandmother Lula also moved to Rockford and joined her daughters Annie Brown and Clara Curry, her sons Frank, Sam, and Clarence Brown, her grandson Houston Sterling, granddaughter Leora (Curry) Sherod, & great-grandchildren who remember her as "Mama Lula". |
