The Steffen Family of Olean, New York

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

I am the second oldest of five children of Frank Lee Steffen Sr. of Olean, NY. He married Bernadine Ann Emerick of Wilkes-Barre, Pa, in April of 1953. I have been researching the family history just prior to my mother's death in October of 1997 and have come a long way since the genesis of this project. I have managed to locate both great-grandparent's names through Social Security applications. I have come upon a stumbling block with the military history of my paternal grandfather when he had deserted the Army in the early 1940s and changed his name from William Downs Steffen to Miller. He passed away in February 1974 in Sunbury, PA. My dad found out that he had an uncle that he never knew who lived in Lock Haven, PA.

We welcomed the newest addition to the Steffen Family Tree this past May of 1999 with Madison Hunter Steffen. She is the youngest daughter of my brother Michael John in Lemoore, CA. There are five of us children and seven grandchildren.

I welcome each one of you visiting the Steffen Family Page. Please enjoy and I hope to keep this updated with photos and news of our happenings!!!

Sad news to report...this past week we found out that my mother's brother, Joseph Emerick, had a house fire in Wilkes-Barre, PA. We lost many, many family items, almost everything that my grandmother Marie had collected of her children over the decades. My uncle was never one to toss out anything, so things had accumultated over the almost thirty years that my grandmother has been gone. My dad is heading out this week to try to salvage anything he can from the house and settle Uncle Joe in his new living arrangements. I will keep the website updated as I hear news.

Okay, now for some good news: so far our Danny Jo has beat the cancer with a clear CT scan a few weeks ago!!! It was a year ago this month that he was diagnosed and started the chemotherapy for over nine weeks. We know that grandma is looking down from Heaven and watching over her "babies" now.

My dad returned from a few days in Wilkes-Barre, Pa, to help our Uncle Joe try to salvage some of his belongings from his house. Dad did managed to get me some family photos that I have yet to check out and see who they might be.

And finally, we welcome Edward Steffen and Loretta Steffen-Chapman to our family tree. They are two of my long-lost cousins that have contacted me recently and will help fill in some of the gaps with living Steffen family members. As soon as I can get the tree completed, it will reside here for everyone to check out.

Danny Jo's Make A Wish comes true next week. My sister had applied to the Western New York Make A Wish Foundation chapter about four months ago and finally received news that her request to take Danny Jo and the family to Walt Disney World in Florida was granted. So next week, they fly out of Buffalo and spend a week in Florida. Danny Jo had said that he wanted to get through the chemotherapy and see DisneyWorld...it'll be a year next month that he completed the regime and so far has remained cancer-free. We consider this in itself to be a wish come true!!! So keep watching this site for new photos and news on their trip!!

Right at this moment, my sister Robin and her family should be settling down at Give Kids the World near Walt Disney World. Since none of them have ever flown before, it was quite an experience on my sister's part. As luck would have it, she got a little motion sickness during the flight out of Buffalo to Atlanta, but the kids all did well. A limosine came to pick them up about 3:30 this morning for the trip to the Buffalo airport. I was looking up the website for the place that they are staying at and they give kids with catatrophic illness and their families a place to visit and enjoy the entertainment in the area at no cost whatsoever. This is in a way, a celebration o
