We are starting to search for our family members. Because records have not been kept very well for black families, we have run into many obstacles in obtaining infomation. Most of our information has been by word of mouth. Unfortunately, over the years, information seems to get distorted. My husband always thought that his mother's last name was Hanson. After a search of the records maintained by the social security administration, we learned through the record of his oldest sister's application for a social security number, that his mother's maiden name was Hampton. We had been looking in census records for years for his mother and we had been hitting a dead-end--now we know why.
We have run into a problem with finding my ancestors as well. I can go back about three generations before I hit the wall. My family supposedly came to the United States from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. So far, I cannot locate them in either locality.
