Mother has in a rather remarkable way carried out a detailed training program. Certainly if this child is going to respond she will to the mother's care. We question the child's mental ability to learn. Continue present care.

Gene and Angie applied to the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children in Minneapolis, Minnesota for treatment. A letter was received back from the hospital on June 17, 1949 stating they would need to exam Paula before it could be determined if they could treat her. She was taken to the Shriners' Hospital in December of 1949. She lived at home until she was just past 3 years old when Gene and Angie enrolled her in a cerebral palsy center in Kansas City, Missouri. Not a month went by that they did not make the trip from Council Bluffs to Kansas City to see here. During her stay at the center, she went through terapy in hopes of helping her to walk and speak. But that was not meant to be. In 1955, it was determined that she would not be able to improve, and she was placed at the Glenwood State Hospital in Glendwood, Ia. At the age of 21 she was moved to a nursing home in Avoca, Iowa.
