View Tree for Maren (Mary) ClementsenMaren (Mary) Clementsen (b. 17 Aug 1871, d. 29 Oct 1931)

Maren (Mary) Clementsen (daughter of Johan Christian Clementsen and Johanne Christina Pedersen) was born 17 Aug 1871 in Horne, Denmark, and died 29 Oct 1931 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She married Emil Jan Jorgensen on 20 Apr 1893 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, son of Jorgen Pedersen and Ane Kirstine Neilsen.

Includes NotesNotes for Maren (Mary) Clementsen:
Mary immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1886. The ship was thIndirekte; although the data base does not show her as Maren.

According to the 1900 Iowa Federal Census, Mary came to the U.S.A. from Denmark in 1886 which would have made her 15 years of age. Her birth record was located in the Asdal Church Records of Horne, Denmark. Her name on the birth record was Maren Clementsen; born August 17,1871, and she was christened on October 15, 1871. Witnesses at her christening were Karen Margarethe Clementsdatter, Clement Johansen, and Christian Larsen. The confirmation record indicates it was held at the Asdal Kirke, Sunday after St. Michael, October 4, 1885. Her name is shown as Maren Klementsen, parents Johan Klementsen and wife Johanne Kristine Pedersen. The birth and christening dates are the same as in her birth record. Shw was 14 at the time of her confirmation. Mary was the eldest of 7 children.

She immigrated to America with her parents and 5 brothers and sisters. Two more children were born in America. I have located the immigration records for Johan & Johanne; however, Mary's name does not appear with their names.

It is said she met Emil Jorgensen at Baylis Park in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They married in 1893. The Register of Marriages for Pottawattamie County shows Mary Clementsen to be 21 years old and parents as John Clementsen and Joh Christain Petersen with the witness as Chr Clementsen (Mary's brother) and a Chr Johnsen. The date of their marriage April 20, 1893 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

In 1903 Mary's mother, Johanne, was killed by a trolley car in front of the family home. Mary & Emil were witnesses to this tragic accident. Mary died in 1931 from what is believed to have been cancer. Vi Jorgensen, a daughter-in-law, witnessed the four hour operation that was performed on Mary. Vi claims it was not the cancer that killed Mary, but not being able to have the strength to fight for recovery after the operation.

A recap of her obituary (Council Bluffs, Nonpareil) on October 30, 1931 is as follows:
Mrs. Mary Jorgensen, 60, wife of Emil J. Jorgensen, 408 24th Ave, died in a local hospital Thursday night from sarcoma. She was a member of St John's English Lutheran Church and of the War Mothers. The body was removed to Woodring's Funeral Home. The funeral home had her age as 60 years, 3 months, and 12 days. Funeral services were held Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at St. John's. Rev Ralph W. Livers officiated. Burial was at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.

There have been stories that Mary was not a Clementsen, but had a different father. I found a birth record when I was in Aalborg, Denmark in the St Budophie Church records of a Anna Marie Cecilie Petersen, showing the mother as Johanne Christine Petersen and the father as Carl Wilhelm Petersen. The birth date is recorded as August 18, 1871. However, there is no further proof this is Mary and is probably a coincidence of similar names. Mary's birth record was recorded in the Asdal Church of Horne, Denmark showing Johan Christian Clementson as her father and Johanne Christine Petersen as her mother. I am certain this is the correct and true birth record, and Mary is indeed a Clementsen.
