James South (son of William South and Nancy Sawyer) was born 1826 in Shelby County, Illinois, and died 08 Apr 1896 in St Aubert, Osage County, Missouri. He married Rebecca Jane Robinson on 15 Feb 1849 in St Aubert, Osage County Missouri96, daughter of Fountain Robinson and Sarah Ann Cason.

The following information was provided by Erma Penning who had married a Penning being a direct decendent of Juelda Rebecca South.

James South enlisted in the Civil War on June 22, 1861 in Co F, Osage County Home Guards (on his tombstone) at Bonnot's Mill, Osage county, Missouri. His rank was that of private. He mustered into service on 22 June 1861 and records show disbanded Oct 5, 1861. Enrolled 4 Aug. 1862 in Co D 28th Regiment, enrolled Militia (Missouri Militia) at Medora, under Lt J. Burnett, commanding officer. His rank was private The town of Medora no longer exists. St Aubert is located there now. James South was ordered into active service on 24th of Sept 1864 at Linn, Missouri. He was redleived from duty on 19 Nov, 1864. This information was taken from the Adjutant General's Certificate. His pension papers which were executed at that time of his discharge, state that he was not a pensioner, but it is known that he later was. These papers show that he was unable to work, a cough, a liver complaint and kidney disease. It is presumed that he lived most of his life in Osage County, where he was a lnad owner and it is said that he gave 5 acres of land to be used for burial pruposes. (The South Cemetery). His paper's show that he died near St. Aubert on 8 Apr 1896.
