The 1870 Census records for Osage, County, Missouri indicates Sarah Elizabeth South's name as Sara E; however, the marriage record for her and tom Hand has her name as Mary elizabeth. Tom and Sarah Elizabeth went to Florida and had a baby girl who died of Yellow Fever. Soon after the return to Missouri, Lizzie died of the fever too. Tom stayed with Lizzie's brother, William Founte and his wife Isabella and family. Tom also was not feeling well. He slept with the oldes child, Leon Frederick. According to the sotyr told by Leon, his mother came into the bedroom and said to Founte, "I think Tom is dead." Leon upon hearing that news made one leap over his Uncle tom to the floor. He said it was an experience he would never forget.
