 Includes NotesNotes for John South:
Information provided by Ron Houghtelin Owatonna, Minnesota:

John South born about 1745 came to Kentucky in 1775 to help establish Fort Boonesboro and was called John South the younger to identify him from his uncle John South Senior as he was about 20 years younger. Thomas South the father of this John South made Land Claims by building a cabin in 1775. The one claim made in today’s Bourbon County was all called the county of Kentucky of Virginia or Fincastle County of Virginia.

Thomas South and John South the younger are both on the Militia list of Captain Holders Company at Boonesboro in June 1779

Thomas South was dispatched to Harrodsburg July 1779 and assigned to Col Bowman’s company under General George Roger Clark. Soon Col Bowman took his militia and attacked the Indian Villages at Chillicothe Ohio and the Indians killed several of Bowman’s men. Ensign Thomas South was one of those killed in that battle he was about 61 years old. Thomas South was in Kentucky only 4 years before he was killed.

It must have been soon after Thomas South was dispatched to Harrodsburg that John South (called sometimes the younger, when he was not with his uncle John South on records he was of course called John South.) moved to the area near Fort Logan (Stanford in Lincoln County Kentucky.. We know that Rebecca his wife and children were living here with them after 1779 when his father was killed. John and Rebecca South had four children before John South was killed with James Estill at Mt Sterling March 22 1782 in Stills Defeat.
