Includes NotesNotes for Dorothy Margaret Gertrude Beintema:
Dorothy Beintema was the second child and only daughter born to Dirk and Dora Beslin Beintema. She was born December 29 1909. however her older brother Leo changed the year on her Birthcertificate because he thought she was to young to get married. She married George Oliver Berhenke October 16 1924, in Rock Island Illinois. She was 14 years old going on 15 they spent their wedding night at her parents home in Rock Island Illinois. She said she got ready for bed in the closet because she was to shy to undress in front of her new husband. She got over her shyness and together they had eleven children. the oldest being born July 29 1926 Donald, then Dorothy,Richard Kenneth,George,Gerald,Arlene,Deloris,Ernest,Daryl, and JoAnn. her mother wanted her to only have two children because she was so fragil and small weighing only about 112 pounds. When she was asked by her youngest daughter why she had so many kids. She Said " everytime one started walking I wanted another one to hold." She nursed all of her babies George and Gerald were twins and she said she would nurse one and give the other one a bottle, then the one that got the bottle would nurse and the other one got the bottle. George built a double crib for the twins so they could be together She said Gerald was always alittle heavyier than George. Because if it was his turn to nurse and George had anything left in his bottle he would take it and drink it too. She said George never seemed to mind sharing with his brother he didn't fuss when he took it away from him. Dorothy worked very hard in her life time raising her children and taking care of her husband. She said sometimes she would have three clothes lines full of diapers. and for a long time she only had a wash board to clean the clothes. She never complained about the hard work. She got up early every morning and made a big breakfast for everyone. before they went to work or school then she would do her house work and start the evening meal sometimes making homemade bread and dinner rolls. she knew the children like fried bread dough so she would save a little bit to fry for them when they came in from school. She always had homemade cookies for a snack also. for her children and grandchildren because they were always stopping by and they knew grandma would have cookies for them. She said the kids never made her nervous she said the only time she got nervous was when they were all in bed and the house was to quiet. Everyone loved her even the neighbors kids called her mom or grandma in the winter time she would make cocoa for the paper boy to stop and have while doing his route in the early mornings so he could warm up. She sewed alot of her childrens and grandchildrens clothes she would take measurements and lay them on a opened up brown paper bag and draw around them that was her pattern. She learned to crochet in her later years and made many afgans and baby blankets to give away. If her grandchildren came with out a hat in the winter she would cut off a sweater sleeve sew one end shut and they had a new stocking cap. if they came with no mittens they left with old socks on their hands. and because grandma did it was the greatest thing in the world. She never complained about being sick or hurting. She loved spending time with her family children and grandchildren they were the loves of her life. She died November 7 1986 at Illini Hospital in Silvis Illinois at the age of 76 She was buried November 10 1986 at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline Illinois.
