Dirk was born March 16 1869 Three miles northeast of Pella Iowa on a farm occupied by his parents and Maria Roelofsz Beintema He was the only child of the family named in favor of the paternal side. Dirk being the namesake of his fathers brother. He was the seventh child of a family of twelve. His parents were both native of the Netherlands members of that early band of colonists, who came with their respective parents. Under the leadership of Dominic Hendrick Pieter Scholte who was Iowas first Holland Settlers. Founded the Town of Pella in 1847. His Paternal Grandfather Dr. Joost Roelofsz who for many years was the only Physician-Surgeon of the Pella colonists. In later years his father Levi in partnership with his brother Dirk were the first to operate a pottery shop in the newly founded village of Pella and perhaps Iowa Levi Beintema family resided on this farm northeast of Pell until the spring of 1883 when they retired from farming and moved to Pella. It was on the farm that Dirk Levi Beintema often helped his father in repairing harness. And after he had completed his elementary education he became engaged as Harness-Maker at the Pella Saddlery shop operated by Henry Holst in 1887 at a wage of one dollar per day. All the work was done by hand It is interesting to note that all the hides were purchased from farmers near Pella and ship to Ohio to be tanned and then returned to Pella to be worked into harness. Dirk continued as a harness maker here until 1893. Where upon dirk relocated in the town of Otley rented a small building and operated a Barber shop Temporarily until becoming employed a few months later at the Pella upholstery shop. But he was more interested in making harness and went to near by Oskaloosa where he became engaged as harness maker at the Fitch and Hull Harness Company.Mean while he entered an application for Harness maker at the Rock Island Arsenal. In the early months of 1898 war had been declared on Spain and by April the orders were received at the Rock Island Arsenal for immediate equipment of 75,000 soldiers. Thus Dirk was notified to report at the Arsenal April 28 to comense his duties in the harness department as his application had been accepted.
