Family legend has it that William Buchannon (spelling could be a number of ways) was a doctor and was married to a Jane Carter from Ireland in South Carolina. I have recently obtained a family legend from another part of the tree that states that William B. II was waiting in line to claim his Indian Heritage and got disgusted with all the drunks and left the line never to return and therefore never substantiated his claim. The family legend stated that W.B. II was over half Indian.
If this is true then the legend about Jane Carter being Irish would have been wrong and her claim would have been Black Irish which would make her 50% Indian. If one looks upon the origins of adding the word Black into a heritage then you will find I am right on with my assumption in this matter. Of course the first legend could be wrong and she could have been 100% Indian.
We all have the legend of having Indian roots within this family so since that is the common denominator, we must assume for now that Jane is our link into the Indian Rolls.
The part about William Sr. being a doctor is not proven as yet, and truthfully will not be until his existence is substantiated by myself or another researcher. For one to have been an Indian and a doctor at that time brings upon this researcher certain feelings of isolation for Mr. Howard. Indians were not accepted, much less appreciated in the 1800's so if this legend is true, then I must wonder if he was only 50% Indian and able to pass as a white man. The aforementioned would have to be true if he was a successful doctor.
Henry Howard is the name of the man who fathered Jessie Howard. I can find no proof of his existence either. If anyone has this information I would greatly appreciate being notified.
I am in the process of adding data to this page, please bear with me and come back often.
Names I am researching are: PHILLIPS, ADCOCK, WHITLEY, HOWARD, JERGINS, WELDY, FINLEY, ADAMS, ARMSTRONG, BAKER, SKAGGS/ROARK, CLARK, LEE, DAVIS, DUNCAN, HARRIS and VANCE.
Quite extraordinary, yet frustrating at times has been the research for my 2 seperate Howard Families. My mother was a Howard that married a Howard. Trying to remember who went with what family has been my biggest challenge.
If anyone finds relatives on this page, please contact if you have new information for me. I do not have the tree done in full as of yet.
