Ancestors and Decendants of John Corbin and Olive Ann Syx

Updated January 30, 2009

About Our Family Research

There are currently hundreds of known decendants resulting from the union of John Corbin Syx (b May 31,1869 Macksburg,OH) and Olive Ann Farrow (b May 31, 1877 Nelsonville, OH)married on April 15,1893 in Athens County, Ohio.

JOHN CORBIN SIX(SYX)
John Corbin Syx was the son of William Six b.1842 and Matilda Gessel b.1848, both believed to have been born in the Morgan/Noble County,OH area. A little information about the Syx or Six ancestry prior to William Six is known. His parents may have been Conrad and Nancy Six. The 1870 United States census records show William and Matilda Six with children named Antley, age 2, John and Andrew, age 1, possibly in Adams Township/Washington County Ohio. Then the next census taken in 1880 reports that in Athens County, OH, a William and Matilda had 5 children at that time; daughter, Antha S. and sons, John Corbin, twin brother Andrew Jack, Alonzo and Wilbur J. One birth record I found shows Alonzo born in 1871 in Washington County, Ohio. I have also seen references to a boy named Homer connected to a William and Matilda Six. It is probable that this is their son. There is a very old photo found in a family collection, showing a Homer Six in a military uniform. Another shows a Homer with Grandma Syx.

Although the census reports show the family name spelled SIX, it was later found "signed" J.C. "SYX" on the marriage license of John Corbin and Olive Ann Farrow.

Andrew Jack Six married Rachel born in England in Athens Co, December 24,1890. They had 5 daughters named Bertha,Fern L.,Ruth,Dorothy Imogene and Rachel Helen.

We are not aware of any living relatives of Antha S. or Alonzo. They both spent some adult years in the Athens Co. Infirmary. Both died in 1908. John's youngest brother Wilber also spelled his name SYX. One of his daughters lives near Birmingham, Alabama, a grandaughter in Wisconsin and a grandson in Atlanta, Georgia.

Of the hundreds of descendants, there is just one living grandchild of William and Matilda Six. John and Olive's 11th child, Roy Lester Syx (b. 1915) of Safety Harbor, FL passed away in December of 2002. Ruby Syx Ansley still lives in Birmingham, AL. She is the youngest daughter of Wilber J. and Agnes Syx.

OLIVE ANN FARROW
Olive Ann Farrow was the daughter of William Thomas Farrow (b. May 12, 1827) and Mary Ann Bateman (b. October 16, 1833) who immigrated from England in 1857. Her parents were born in Durham County, England. Wm Thomas' parents were Robert and Elizabeth. Mary Ann's parents were Daniel and Alice Bateman also of England. The family Bible shows that Mary Ann Bateman Farrow gave birth to 13 children. William (d. January 14, 1913) and Mary Ann (d. July 8, 1896) lived in Pratt City, Alabama in later years, where they died and were buried at Fraternal Cemetery.

Olive Ann's brother Tom Farrow and sister Carrie(Carolyn)Parkin raised families in Jefferson Co., Alabama. Tom and Emma had 2 sons, Pearl and Ellis and grand and great grandchildren. Carrie was married to Will Parkin,a preacher. They had at least 13 children with many decendants. Carrie raised berries which were sold to Birmingham hotel dining rooms. Roy Syx remembers one other Aunt (sister of his Mother) but cannot recall any details about her. There is much new information about the other children of William and Mary Ann Farrow as well as ancestors of these great grandparents.
