1. Son of Sammy Rankin Tannehill and Della May Steverson.
2. He enlisted in the army 22 February 1943. He died in Ipswich, Mendlesham Suffolk, England , Army Airforce Station 156, of unknown causes but believed by myself, Charles Wendell Leo n Tannehill Sr., to be heart failure. He was found dead between his barracks and the latri ne lying across a fence and believed to have died at 0400 to 0500 on 10 June 1944.
3. His name is entered in the American Memorial Chapel for American war dead, St. Pauls' Ca thedral, London, England.
4. Buried for a time in England at 1500, 13 June 1944 in the U.S. Military Cemetery, Cambridg e, England, 42 miles northwest of London just outside the university town of Cambridge in Pl ot K, Row 1, Grave 1. He was disenterred on 3 June 1948 and arrived in Eldon, Missouri on 2 8 July 1948 at 1500 PM. Funeral arrangements were handled by Kays Funeral Home, Eldon, Missou ri. Corporal James D. Clark was his honor escort. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart me dal.
5. Ordnance work done by myself, Charles Wendell Leon Tannehill, at the Arizona temple, 17 N ovember 1987.
7. Delbert initially tried to enlist in the navy but was deaf in one ear but was enlisted i n the Army Air Corps.
8. Delbert was one of the original members of the 34th Bomb Group (H) to travel to England fr om Boston, Massachusetts on the USS Wakefield. He was attached to the 8th Air Force, 96th Ai r Wing, 34th Bomb Group (H), 7th Bomb Squadron. His service number was 37509623 and his speci alty (MOS) was 256 - Aircraft Welder. The (H) indicates heavy as in heavy bombers. His specif ic duties were to inspect B24 Liberators for battle damage after their return from a mission.
9. His and my father received a $75.00 burial compensation from the U.S. government. Delbert' s personal effects included: $8.05 in cash, a package of letters, a red cross bag, a packag e of photographs, a billfold (wallet), a silver ring, 1 key, a cigarette lighter, a tooth bru sh, a razor with blades, a shaving kit, a leather belt, a fountain pen, a comb, a pair of bro wn low cut shoes and a pair of swimming trunks. Mine and his mother kept all these items exce pt the silver ring which my father kept and was buried with, until her death on 2 February 1 981.
10. Delbert was never married but he will have the millenium to do so if he wishes. I'm looki ng forward to seeing him there.
