1. Came to America in 1658 with his brother - Eduard. Family name spelling was changed from Tannahill to the present Tannehill at that time.
William and his brother were Presbyterians who followed Ninian Beal during an uprising in Scotland. They were defeated in 1653, and many were beheaded or imprisoned. Some went on to act as police and soldiers for the English in Ireland, Barbados in the West Indies, and then in America in Maryland. William homesteaded in Prince Georges County. When his sentence was finished, he built a farm called Oxon Hill and brought his family and his brother's over from Scotland in 1663. The spelling changed from Tannahill to Tannehill when the Tannahills were sent as war prisoners to Ireland, where the spelling was conformed to Irish pronunciation.
